Jnanadabhiram Barooah Law College, popularly known as J.B. Law College (JBLC) came in to existence in the year 1969. The College was named after the name of Jnanadabhiram Barooah, a well known personality in the legal field of Assam and the first principal of the first law college of Assam.
The JBLC is one of the leading Law College of North East India imparting legel education since its inception in the year 1969. Presently the college is permanently affiliated to the Guwahati University and recognized by the Bar Council of india, It also registered with the University Grants Commission.
Student from entire north Eastern States apart from Assam comes to this College for legal education. It is worth mentioning that Justice B.L. Hansaria, former Chief Justice of Odissa High Court and former Judge of Supreme Court of India, Justice T. N. Singh, former Judge of Madhya Pradesh High Court, Justice K. M. Lahiri, former Chief Justice of Gauhati High Court, Justice T. C. Das, former Judge of Gauhati High Court were amongst the galaxy of distinguished teachers, who served in the College. Justice A. H. Saikia, former Judge, Gauhati High Court and presently Chief Justice of J & K High Court served as teacher as well as Principal of College. Justice H. N. Sarma presently Judge, Gauhati High Court is one of the alumni of the College. Eminent educationst of yesteryears Late Golap Chandra Choudhury was the frist Principal of the College. The College authority is keenly interested to persue academic excellence in the field of Legal education. Presently the College is offering 3 years LL.B., 5 Years B.A.LL.B(Hons) and LL.M. Courses.
The Objective of the college interalia are:
1) Pursuit of legal knowledge and development of personality of students to serve the society by developing skills in advocacy, legal services, legislation, reforms etc.
2) Learning of law and legal processes and their role in national building.
3) The college is determine to sustain the status and academic structure in the field of legal education for which it was established on popular demand of the society.
The college is located in the heart of the city of Guwahati in a beautiful location at R.G. Baruah Road, near Anondoram Baruah Fly Over in the Kamrup(Metro) district of the state of Assam. The Guwahati city is considered as the gateway of the North East, well connected with all states of North East part of India. This capital city of Assam in situated in the bank of the mighty river Brahmaputra - the red river and its scenic natural beauty if another feature of the city. One of the famous holy shrine of India, the "Maa Kamakhya Temple" is located on the hill top of Nilachal Hill in the city. "Pragjyotishpura", the ancient name of Guwahati was also the capital of Assam. The city is well connected by rail, road and air transport with other parts of the country, and presently has become the hub of academic activities of North East India.
The college is having its own campus with multistoried R.C.C. buildings with class rooms, common rooms, auditorium, Moot Court Hall, Library, Office Room, canteen etc. with all modern facilities.
